Here is a super fun activity for kids of all ages that you can do with ingredients you will find in your pantry. We call them colorful explosions.
There are lots of different ways you can go about doing this. You will need these 3 ingredients to get started: food coloring, white vinegar and baking soda.
You will also need to have a container in which to make the explosions happen, you can use egg cartons or a large mixing bowl. You will need containers for mixing the food coloring and white vinegar, paper cups or small bowls work well for this. Lastly it is helpful if you have little droppers. You can buy them here on amazon, or you can probably find some left over from when your kids were babies and you had to administer medicine from a plastic syringe or dropper.
Step 1: Put a couple drops of food coloring into small paper cups (or bowls or whatever else you have handy).
Step 2: Pour white vinegar into the cups with the food coloring.
Step 3: Put some baking soda into a large mixing bowl, or multiple small mixing bowls, or if you don't want to deal with clean up put the baking soda into egg cartons. Egg cartons will make lots of mini volcanos!
Step 4: Put a couple of droppers out and let your kids get to work by dropping the vinegar and food coloring mixture into the baking soda! When the fizzing reaction stops you can put more baking soda out and let them drop it in using a spoon. The great thing about this activity is the ingredients are cheap and readily available.
After making the mini explosions I took away the egg cartons and cups and put out some watercolor trays, water and brushes and let the kids have fun painting the white paper that was covering the table. Water color is a great project to transition into after the explosions because the paper will already have some color on it and they can just add to it! Kids move through projects fast, so I like to stretch out projects whenever I can!
